Carlos “Coco” Nogales is one of the most recognized, respected and loved professional surfers in Mexico. Coco ran away at age 11 and fled a life of poverty on the streets of Mexico City to make a new life for himself in Puerto Escondido. He began working at a local restaurant, repairing surfboards and in his spare time began surfing and soon overcame his fear of the ocean. He was terrified the waves, but also felt a deep attraction to them. At 17 he received national acclaim as a breakthrough surfer, today he is one of the most renowned Big Wave surfers in the world.
He knows Puerto Escondido’s waves better than anyone else and plays host to the other big wave surfers who come to this Mexican city in search of giant tubes. Coco is a Surf legend that has become a mentor to a new generation as well as an activist fighting for the preservation of Mexico’s beaches.
Through his project entitled AHAVA Coco provides children from rural communities in Oaxaca with surfboards, drinking water and provides awareness to care for and clean up the beaches; his way of giving back to community of surf that has given him so much.
